The team is nominally Belgian (founded in Brussels, with a base there), but it is more multicultural than its members’ citizenships.
Ava Carrère, who sings and plays percussion, has French-American roots, spent her childhood and youth travelling in the south of Europe, and gained artistic skills in alternative Berlin clubs. Ismaël Colombani – a vocalist and guitarist who experiments with exotic string instruments – is half Corsican and half French-speaking Belgian. Émilie Alenda (bassoon and keyboards) comes from France and percussionist Nilo Moreira Lima – from Brazil.
In their songs, there’s everything that a world music lover may desire: Creole Maloya, Caribbean Calypso, Brazilian Bossa Nova, Greek Rebetiko, French Chanson. An attractive and carefree melange, and yet this is just the beginning. Because there is still an element of the well-known Brecht-Weill cabaret in the music of Wise As Savages, there are punk manifestos and poetic provocations. And there’s a colourful masquerade, concealing genuine care for the world and its unfortunate inhabitants.
