In the spring of 1995, when the then twenty-three-year-old Konrad Imiela sang Waits in Polish (in Roman Kołakowski’s masterful translations), the author of “Blue Valentine” was blossoming in his fifth decade. Still, we all imagined him as a sarcastic old-timer, miraculously able to go on for so long on coffee, bourbon and cigarettes. Of course, we were fooled: Tom Waits is eternal.
In the spring of 2023, with no small amount of artistic success under his belt, Imiela still loves Waits with a pure student’s love. And in this affection, he is faithfully supported by his friend: Adam Skrzypek. The double bass player was in the band that accompanied Imiela on “Fish Trombone”. Centuries later, they label the “Waits 2022” as a duo.
– We have the same pulse, a lot of things happen spontaneously between us on stage or in the recording studio, says Konrad Imiela of his artistic partner. – Tom Waits’ songs are, in a way, the cornerstone of our friendship. In life and art.
Eleven strange stories, poetic images, dreams, and snapshots of a rusty, dirty, and twisted world. Voice, guitar and bass murmur from the underground.
