The artists want to unravel the mystery of the Dąbrowski’s Mazurka, a song which, in a slightly altered form, is the national anthem of Poland. Heard and sung by successive generations, it has become part of our DNA.
And what could a modern Polish anthem look like? What should the new story be, written in a free Poland, in a country without serfdom, with universal voting rights, in a country where women teach at universities, are judges, doctors, astrophysicists?
– I am old, very old. 225 years is a long time. It used to be five and a half generations, now it’s more than eleven. The world has accelerated, I have not. And in today’s world – if you stand still you go backwards, so I am already very backward. I’m so backward that I still use the word ‘tarabans’ even though hardly anyone knows what it means anymore.
I don’t really understand what is happening to the nation today. Women are fighting for their rights, sodomites are fighting for their rights, trans people (whoever they are?) are fighting for their rights too. The peasants have their rights, the atheists too. Even children have their rights. Everyone now has their rights or has the right to fight for their rights. And do they at least fight with a sabre?
I am Polish, although I was born abroad when Poland did not exist. Now it exists, and I don’t understand anything, and it hurts me, and I have a patriotic depression because of it, and I have hiccups, and I keep hearing “we’ll take it back, we’ll take it back, we’ll take it back”, and I don’t think I want to take anything from anyone anymore, I want to give, but I don’t really know how, I don’t know to whom, and I have absolutely no idea what.
