Keyboardist Marek Pędziwiatr and percussionist Marcin Rak were born in 1987. That was when, on one January night, the temperature in Kielce dropped to -33.9°C, and almost a metre of snow fell in Bielsko-Biała.
The music of Zima Stulecia (The Winter of the Century) is a fantasy about a time that Marek and Marcin cannot remember but are willing and able to mythologise. As we know, there will never be a winter like this again, lemon tea will no longer be so hot and nourishing, and the snow will no longer paralyse the countryside and towns in such a wonderful way.
Marek and Marcin’s element is improvisation. Riffs, broken melodic motifs, and persistent and broken rhythmic patterns often slide into blockbuster techno – and then we are transported back to the days when we used to go sledging down the banks of the Oder.
But there is much more to this melancholic electronic blizzard: the interlinked longer and shorter tracks are like a soundtrack to a non-existent documentary about the hardships of living in perpetual white and frozen snow.
Or is it just science fiction today?
