It is the 1950s. Hollywood is undergoing profound changes and sound cinema has finally replaced silent films. These changes affect many actors and actresses associated with noir, including Norma Desmond, a fallen star who cannot adapt to the new reality.
In vain, she looks for love in letters from fans, in husbands and even… in a chimpanzee. But then, her melancholy is interrupted by a young man, Joe Gillis, a cynical and resigned screenwriter struggling to survive in the ruthless world of Hollywood.
Pragmatic and desperate at first, he gradually becomes trapped in a destructive relationship with Norma Desmond, leading to a double life between women, dreams, fame and happiness.
