Old dances and songs from Podlasie, Western Belarus and Polesie (essentially the areas on both sides of the current state border that runs through the Białowieża Forest), i.e. obereks, polkas, waltzes, and songs that defy easy classification.
The Polish-Belarusian Hajda Banda (Гайда Банда) bases its sound on raw, spontaneous singing and regional variations of instruments: violin, dulcimer, hoop drum and three-row accordion.
Remigiusz Mazur-Hanaj from the Radio Folk Culture Centre described the band’s debut album “Hajda!”, in 2023, as follows:
– Joy of playing, energy and fire and a high level of performance. You can feel the youth and vitality, and the spring wind is blowing. This music might seem predictable: there are no breakthroughs or major surprises, but that’s not the point. (…) Everything is simply full of colourful musicality, varied and interesting to listen to.
Because when we dance and play, we also listen, just in a slightly different spectrum, not only consciously, but our bodies respond as well.
