“The Arrival” is a musical poem based on Shaun Tan’s album.
Parting, longing, loneliness, alienation – these are the feelings that accompany everyone who leaves their country and family, and decides to travel to the unknown – in pursuit of a better life. The book contains suggestive, magic images, which – without words – not just illustrate the plot, but interpret it; give ordinary places, objects, animals and even social events or phenomena an unexpected, deeper context.
This is the story of The Arrival’s journey to the New World. He is accompanied by ships, clouds, suitcases, magical beings and other travelers looking for a better future. The New World turns out to be incomprehensible, mysterious, strange and abstract, full of human stories.
This is a story of boundless love, longing, fear, as well as admiration for freedom and otherness. Seven fourth-year students of musical theatre acting take you into the magical, oneiric world of wandering. And the story of The Arrival’s journey is told through music, acting and movement.
