Roots emerge, wriggle, reach out to us/for us. Grandmothers and grandfathers bypass their children – they’re too close – and come to their grandchildren.
Who were they when they arrived in Lower Silesia in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s? They came from Lviv, Vilnius, Chełm, Lublin, Podlasie, Świętokrzyskie, Eastern Borderlands, Greece, Serbia, Bosnia, France. From Poland to Poland.
It was supposed to be better, cheaper, more prosperous. Just for a while, before the Third World War, before the Germans came again.
Some of them were brought here by the war, some by death, and by the loss of everything.
Who are they now? After all, they stayed. And who are we? After all, we have them in us.
If they came here today, what would their songs be like? Come and find out.
But rest assured – there are no nostalgic interwar Polish hits, no multicultural or religious idyll.
Instead, folk songs mutated into resettlement trip-hop, a Chinese-Cuban version of the Wroclaw bugle call, Podlasie-Ruthenian ambient, convivial Lviv industrial and folk NU jazz.
In addition to the music, the show’s multi-layered narrative consists of displaced persons’ memories and video projections. All these components present interrelated stories.
