Wrocław and Szczecin both lie on the Oder River — and that’s where the similarities end. Szczecin paprikash, invented in 1967 at the Gryf food plant to process fish scraps, was never more than a sad tourist necessity — upriver. Downriver, however, it earned itself something far more serious — a monument. Seasonal, yes. But still a monument.

Współczesny Theatre’s production is not a sentimental hymn to this culinary oddity (for some, though, it can be). This flashy, absurd, meta-theatrical comedy works like life itself: a fishy, minced mass, sealed in a tin of existence, and seasoned with random spices.

Someone calls. Someone doesn’t answer. Someone has a birthday. Someone goes to the doctor. Someone is the doctor. Someone is sick. Someone has an appointment. Someone is born. Someone is overdue. Someone dies. Someone gets abducted by aliens. Someone hits their head and dreams they are human.
