“In the third decade of the 21st century — an era of new media, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence — a song with simple piano accompaniment is like a pen-and-ink drawing,” says Paweł Mykietyn.
The poems of American poet Sara Teasdale (1884–1933), translated into Polish by Anna Ciciszwili, form the foundation of this project. These deeply personal lyrics evoke intense emotion and a sensitive inner world. At the heart of this poetry lie the beauty and pain of love, while its simple form lends clarity to reflections on life, death, and transience.
Seemingly archaic, rhymed verses invite musical interpretation. The composer’s task, therefore, is not to decorate, but to uncover — or rather emphasise — their beauty using the simplest possible means, while evoking the deepest emotional response in the listener. The ambition of this renowned composer-scholar is to find the point at which words and sound enter into the fullest possible relationship, free of ornament and elaborate construction.
Paweł Mykietyn, making his debut here as an accompanist, is joined on this most lyrical of journeys by Maja Laura — a generation younger, an accomplished pianist in her own right, and an artist unafraid of experimental work. But not tonight. This evening, it is quiet stillness that will sing the loudest.
