The gentleman tramp — dressed in a jacket too tight, trousers too large, worn-out shoes, topped with a bowler hat and armed with a cane. And that moustache… oh, that moustache.
When Charlie Chaplin made The Circus in 1928, his screen alter ego was already a cultural icon, recognizable on both sides of the Atlantic, and Chaplin himself was among the most celebrated filmmakers of the silent era. Today, The Circus (which earned him an acting nomination at the very first Academy Awards) is rarely listed among the timeless masterpieces such as The Kid, The Gold Rush, City Lights, or Modern Times.
By taking on the role of a collective live accompanists, Czerwie therefore avoid confronting rigid expectations and well-worn associations. Following the adventures of Charlie the Tramp, they are free to shape the film’s emotional landscape through psych-folk soundscapes.
The musicians add their own sonic layer to a story that endlessly repeats itself, everywhere and always: someone has nothing and suddenly becomes rich; someone runs, someone chases; someone arrives at a place where, naively, they believe they will find love and a better life. And, of course, the more melancholic the ending, the louder the applause.
